1 Corinthians 2

1 And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.

2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

I love it. It’s not in our persuasive words but in the power of God’s Words. Learned lesson soulwinning, don’t argue etc. Don’t need to learn debate strategy, we need to memorize scripture.

He “determined” – made a conscious choice.

Main thing! Not age of earth, not eschatology, etc. Get People Saved!

3 And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.

Remember this is Paul writing this who most would consider the greatest follower of Christ. It doesn’t matter if you are afraid or tremble while you give the gospel. What matters is that you give it.

Look at what people said about Paul, 2 Cor. 10:9-11

4 And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power:

5 That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Should be huge encouragement for us. It’s not in our skill! That’s a good thing. Use God’s Word.

6 Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:

To mature believers, to Christians that have the full understanding of God. Big difference between worldly wisdom and Godly wisdom.

7 But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:

The gospel to all.

8 Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

The jews, specifically the rabbis, had their worldly wisdom. That’s how far apart worldly wisdom is from Godly wisdom, they killed Christ, Colossians 2:3 “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”

9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

(Isaiah 64:4) Sounds like heaven, and there may be some of that in here (cf. Romans 8:18), but considering context, verses just before and after, this is about the gospel. Nobody saw in their worldly wisdom, the devil didn’t see it, how God would shine His light through Christ’s work and salvation through faith alone.

10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.

It’s been revealed! We have the Word of God. Gospel simple, but bible study last lifetime.

11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

“Like is known only by like” Just as a man only truly knows himself, we can’t know about God by seeking Him with wisdom or guessing, but what we know of Him we know because the Spirit has revealed things to us through revelation of the Scriptures.

12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.

13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

So this means mainly, that we explain spiritual things to spiritual people. That’s been the thrust of this section, and what is made clearer by the next verse.

We can also take this as the Spiritual things from Scripture compared with Spiritual things from Scripture. Sometimes new believers want to take one verse and run with it without having much knowledge of the bible as a whole……

14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

I see this verse in action all the time. Unsaved people trying to use verses to attack the bible or come up with bizarre doctrines that have never been part of Christian thinking.

The world says see and believe, God says believe then you’ll see.

15 But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.

A spiritual person, a believer (ppl say “spiritual w/ out being Christian lol) discerns all things, understands the way the world is, can understand the things of God. But to a worldly person Christians are just weirdos and the bible doesn’t make sense…..

16 For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? but we have the mind of Christ.

We have the mind of Christ because we have the Holy Spirit! So we SHOULD judge things. The believer judges and discerns and we are supposed to. Also this is quoted from Isaiah 40:13 “Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?”

How do we grow in knowledge of Lord? Read your bible.
